McCoy Bolt Works proposed a system cost savings concept on a large trailer leaf-spring suspension for Customer A. The new concept involved redesigning the u-bolt in a manner that allowed the complete elimination of the spacer casting. The cost of the u-bolt increased for mechanical strength requirements and to prevent crushing the axle without a spacer casting. The spacer elimination delivered a combined cost reduction of 31%, weight reduction of 35%, and elimination of one part in the customer s system. McCoy Bolt performed assembly stress and deflection tests to develop and refine the concept.
McCoy Bolt Works proposed system cost savings concepts for medium and heavy duty truck leaf-spring suspensions to Customers B and C. In both cases, the u-bolt is redesigned to reduce the material content of the spacer casting, rather than a complete elimination. In both cases, the cost of the u-bolt changed slightly for mechanical strength requirements, while the spacer casting redesign resulted in combined u-bolt / spacer cost reductions of 15% and 20%, with weight reductions of 10.5% and 30.3%. McCoy Bolt performed saddle tests to develop and refine the concept.
